A knife can split a plank with much less effort. The stick wedges you crafted from sticks/branches allow you to split logs into planks if you have a mallet/hammer. These are very limited use items. Axes only allow you to go straight to splitting logs to planks, or planks into sticks.Get a car or truck (if you have Filibusters used cars mod). Until then your best bet is to use ropes (2-4) to tie logs into log stacks, then hauling them to your preferred location and sawing them to planks there. But early on the most efficient way (if you are in a neighborhood) is to disassemble furniture in houses that are close to you.
